About Dhamma School
The Venerable Soma Memorial Dhamma School, governed by the Buddhist Vihara (Temple) of Queensland, was inaugurated in 2005 under the guidance of Chief Incumbent Venerable Sitinamaluwe Sugathasara Thero. Starting with a single class, it has grown to six classes with over 100 students from Prep to Year 10. The school operates every Saturday from 4:00 pm to 6:15 pm, excluding Queensland school holidays.
The school’s success is attributed to the dedication of volunteers, teachers, visiting monks, and parents, who help create a nurturing environment for spiritual and moral growth.
In addition to weekly lessons, students participate in spiritual and cultural activities, including:
Sil Programs: Promoting mindfulness and self-discipline through the practice of Buddhist precepts.
Buddhist Cultural Events: Celebrating events like Vesak and Poson Poya, reinforcing Buddhist traditions and values.
Katina Ceremony: Involving students in this sacred event teaches generosity, respect, and reverence for the Sangha.
The school also focuses on:
Buddhist Knowledge: Introducing key teachings such as the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path.
Ethical Conduct: Instilling principles of kindness, compassion, and equanimity in daily life.
Meditation and Mindfulness: Encouraging practices that promote emotional resilience and wisdom.
Community Service: Involving students in acts of generosity and service to others.
Leadership: Offering older students opportunities to mentor younger peers.
This comprehensive approach nurtures spiritually enriched and morally responsible individuals, equipped to integrate Buddhist values into their lives.
